Saffron & Sage is a holistic health club designed to connect you to the practitioners, practices & products to help you regain or maintain your wellbeing. The space was founded on the belief that every human life is valuable, more precious than gold. Located in the Little Italy neighborhood of San Diego, Saffron & Sage offers a wide range of services, classes and events.
In September 2012, after years as a community leader and entrepreneur had taken its toll, Saffron & Sage founder Cristin Smith searched for a season of rest and a break from the constant activity which she’d grown accustomed—and she found it in Mexico. During her time of restoration on sabbatical, a friend noticed a lump on Cristin’s neck that was later confirmed to be four tumors rapidly growing in her neck and thyroid. Her doctors both in Mexico and the United States suggested the typical slew of surgeries and medications. Instead, she chose to explore more natural options and began a journey towards wellness of the mind, body and spirit.
Why you decided to start your own business?
Saffron & Sage is my 4th business and the only one that I didn’t intend on starting. Saffron & Sage grew out of a health crisis when doctors found four tumors rapidly growing in my neck and thyroid. When I was younger I knew I wanted to be an Entrepreneur because I grew up in a family of business owners and it was a matter of time before I figured out what type of business I wanted to create. After having severe cystic acne in high school and trying every chemical peel and pharmaceutical drug to make it go away I dreamed of created a spa that centered around skincare from the inside out. Little did I know that 10 years later that dream would resurface around the idea of holistic healthcare impacting our client’s skin to every aspect of their wellbeing. As I navigated my own wellness journey I couldn’t find a team of Practitioners who were under one roof providing integrative care so I thought I would create a space where every aspect of your experience was curated from the Practitioners to the products, classes to services to remove all the confusion and controversy of what comes along with navigating chronic conditions in an integrative way. Our flagship location in Little Italy is the first of many holistic health clubs I plan to open and just in time for Christmas our skincare collection will be arriving on the shelves of our boutique and in our backbar!
One piece of advice you’d give to someone starting out?
Is your business the expression of your strengths and story, pain and passion? If it is then I encourage you to form a team of individuals who can make it (CEO), sell it (CMO) and manage the money (CFO). You need to be clear about which hat you are wearing and find the other key players to the same is true for them (strengths, story, passion, pain) and then forge forward relentlessly leading until you have achieved your desired outcome!
